Below are a few of the courses that have been run at Arnhem Wharf for parents. Please check the calendar and the newsletters for updates on what is coming up each term. If you have any questions, you can also speak to Nahar (on Mondays, Thursdays & Fridays).
In June 2019, parents took part in a 5 week L1 interpreting course. The course was very well received by those who took part and there are plans to follow up with the L2 course.
Island House courses
Island House are offering accredited online courses for parents in health and social care. They are also facilitating "brush up your skills", a pre-employment project, which covers things like CV writing, completing application forms and interview techniques.
"I really enjoyed it and it was a great opportunity for me to meet new people, learn new skills and be confident to apply for jobs."
"I would definitely recommend the parents course to any parent who wants to get back to work or learn something new. They won't regret it."
"I have met new friends and taken some online course with lovely Cathy. They recommended me to go to Island Advice Centre and now I am working as volunteer in Island House Community Centre. I really enjoy being there."
MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!)
Early Years parents and their children have been taking part in MEND; a fun and active programme encouraging families to live healthy lifestyles. Families have been playing games together and trying a range of fruits, such as papaya and passion fruit so parents feel confident teaching their children about healthy foods.
Reading with your child
Early Years parents are learning techniques to help their children develop their reading skills. They have been practising different activities to take home and do with their children as well as creating different props to help tell the story.
ESOL and ICT for ESOL learners
Some of our parents have been learning English and improving their ICT skills as well. Activities include CV writing and are tailored to the needs of the group.
